ADSL User Plans Changed

The new plans are on the rates page. Hopefully all plan changes should take effect by Monday 04/04/2011. A few of the business clients may have 2 plan changes pending if services are currently available.

Sadly the lower usage users have gone up in price but most users are either the same or cheaper than what they were currently paying. The new plans are at least 4 times faster than the previous plans and the GB allowance is for downloaded content only. EG 15GB plan allows 15GB download irrespective of uploaded content.

If anyone does have any problems or issues, please get in touch with me.

ADSL Plan Changes

My provider is dropping the 256Kbps / 512Kbps services and this will effect most ADSL users here. The new plans are on the rates pages. I have been informed the migration to them will take place around 03/2011.

I have also queried the provider on numerous points, a few being (1) minimum guaranteed speeds; (2) why some area's are still are not capable of getting an adsl service and (3) what exacly data allowance entails, does it include uploads? For the time being I would assume it does include uploads.

Sadly for the smaller users, it will be cheaper to get a 3g wireless service. If you can use a mobile phone next to your computer / laptop, it will be cheaper to use this option as there are some cheap 3g wireless plans available.

3rd Party Software

Most software downloaded from the internet does have additional programs included (terminology is 'bundled' software). This means you may download a program or a game to install and you find you have additional icons or programs installed on your computer / laptop that do other things that seems to have come from nowhere, not even related to what you downloaded.

Software providers do this intentionally, what you download may be free or shareware or time / usage restricted. The vendor gets paid to 'add' these 3rd party programs to the software to generate some form of income.

Some of this 3rd party software is harmless, others not so and tend to be misleading or deceptive. If you do download software off the internet don't just click all the answers 'yes' without reading what it is going to installed. Some of these 3rd/4th party vendors often lead to other software that may do harm and definately slows your system down having totally redundant software installed.

Acrobat version 9 is one that comes straight off the top of the head, it installs the reader, and the updater that wants you to install other adobe software, installs adobe.com (which apparently does nothing) and installs adobe air without even asking.

Summary, just take note of what the installation program is actually installing.
